The Sunderland Welfare Action Group
The Sunderland Welfare Action Group is commonly referred to by its acronym SWAG. It is a grassroots campaign without party political affiliation. It has the following aims:

- To campaign to ensure that claimants are treated with respect, that welfare is seen as a right as well as a privilege
- To campaign to ensure that the Welfare system is made as simple as possible so that it is not difficult or degrading for claimants.
Barnes, Pallion & Millfield Residents Association
Barnes, Pallion & Millfield Residents Association is commonly referred to as “BPMRA”. The residents of these areas came together to generate community spirit that has been lost over the years in Sunderland.
The residents work closely with the local council to evolve the areas in many areas. There aims are:
- Tackle local issues around the environment
- Working towards common goals for the general area
- Work closely with the council to ensure that the area is listened to and not ignored.
- To campaign on all areas that the resident feel will degrade the areas social stance.
Sunderland Against the Cuts
Sunderland Against the Cuts (SATC) was set up not long after the coalition announced its plans to brutally cut public spending. The group fights alongside hundreds of thousands of other groups fighting against the cuts the coalition are planning to make.
