Our rapidly expanding branch of the Green Party was founded in October 2009 to act on the following principles:

- Environment
Nature provides absolutely everything that we need to live, and to enjoy life. Plants and animals provide food and clothing, and help each other to flourish. Mineral resources are not going to last forever, and are not always replaceable. We need systems to ensure that what we have is carefully conserved, so we're not wasting natural resources, whilst maintaining the balance of nature. This is a priority of the Green Party.

How we will bring the Environment policies to Sunderland:
- Working with local organisation to ensure that wildlife, parks, green areas and children's playground are clean and safe.
- Pressure the local council and councillors to make more recycling points in all wards round Sunderland.
- Promote green living options around the city.
- Work closely with local businesses to recycle their waste and not send it to landfill.
- Engage with residents, ask what they want and need to help make recycling easier, as many wards have different initiatives.

- Fairness
We all have a right to a good education, quality healthcare, the ability to work for a living and to live without fear of crime. These should be made possible for everybody in the city regardless of where they live or how wealthy they are. Our aim is to make this possible.

How we will bring Fairness policies to Sunderland:
- Ensure citizens of the city are included in more decisions from the council, such as public spending.
- Pressure the council into making more public meetings, to discuss what residents want and need.
- Speak with residents from wards to help them tackle issues that the current council are happy to talk about from behind their desks.
- Work with local organisations that help improve people lives, such as SWAG and BPMRA.

- Equality
Everybody is different. However, this does not mean that people should be given special treatment, whether good or bad, because of their differences. We want to make Sunderland a place where people will have the same opportunities regardless of age, sex, religion (if it applies), race, sexuality or any of the other traits that make us the people we are.

How we will bring Equality policies to Sunderland:
- Fight for equal rights of minority groups around the city, ensuring their voices are heard.
- Ensure that the rights of all citizens of the city no matter what colour or creed are upheld and protected.
- Work with local groups to ensure that fairness and equality is achieved.

- Responsibility
A progressive society cannot be achieved solely by those in power. The co-operation of the people is always important. However, the powers that be must be expected to lead by example and provide the people with the tools and support to change their society for the better. We will provide these.

How we will bring Responsibility policies to Sunderland:
- Co-operate with local community wards to maintain strong relationships and trust.
- Hold regular meetings in which all citizens are welcome to engage with the branch group and make sure we are working towards what we preach.
- Hold our selves directly accountable for the work and actions we take as a party on citizen’s behalf’s.
- Work on policies that are for the long term future and not just the short term. Ensuring we are communicating and involving citizens on all aspects of the city.
